I have 30 days until I turn 30, so I thought I'd try to choose 30 moments that have helped shape who I am and want to be. Coming up with the list has been challenging...and enlightening. These are in no particular order.
21: Mentoring Megan, Marilyn and Amy.
I've held the belief for a long time that we should all invest in the "next generation." Taking the time and resources to pour into a younger person is one of the most rewarding things you can do, in my opinion. When I was involved in youth ministry at Grace, I decided to invest in three young women. There was no real formula, except to "do life" in front of them. I was more real with them than my best friends. I tried to be completely transparent and vulnerable, while always trying to steer them toward good choices and loving Jesus to the best of their ability. To be honest, though, I think they taught me way more than I taught them:
- Amy taught me that you should follow what your passionate about, even if it means you're being pulled in six different directions at once. The important things will rise to the top.
- Megan taught me that its okay to be romantic, and it's a good thing to have dreams.
- Marilyn taught me that laughter is way underrated, and it's always best to follow a good cry with an even better laugh.
How their relationships shaped me:
- I like to try new things and explore different passion areas.
- I'm not ashamed of my hopes and dreams.
- I laugh, a lot, and mainly at myself.
